Shiva’s Alive Truth
As per Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is the destroyer of the world. But in reality, he is also the creator and personifies the regenerative cycle of life.
To illustrate this, Shiva is depicted in Indian calendar art as the dancer Nataraja with his hourglass-shaped drum. His matted, braided hair, twirling form and his rhythmical whirls depict that he is the lord of Time and all that is created and destroyed in it.
However, he is not a man of few words and often remains silent during his dance. When he does speak, he is blunt and frank. He is also the protector of animals and the god of yogic knowledge. He is an enigma, and even his most common images can be misleading. For example, Shiva’s chubby cheeks and blue color, which are illustrated in calendar art, don’t reflect his personality.
Despite his serious and stern demeanor, Shiva is also compassionate and loves to play jokes. He is the lover of the beautiful and sexy Mohini, who was a consort of Vishnu and his wife Parvati. Once when he saw her, he was overwhelmed by unintentional lust. He wanted to savour her beauty but she kept escaping from his grasp. In the end, he caught her and a violent coupling happened.
Another story describes how Shiva threw a cow into the air in anger because the cows were disturbing his meditation. As a result, the cows were burnt and had patches of brown skin. In order to calm him down, the other gods gave him a magnificent bull as his companion, Nandi. The bull became the symbol of his strength and pride, and Nandi is still known as the guardian of all animals today.
The moral of this story is that you should never be judgmental of anyone because the good deeds you do will reap the fruits of your actions. In the same way, be mindful of the karmas you carry out in this life and always be aware of the consequences of your actions. Be with people but detached (like Shiva as an Adi Yogi who meditates and stays alone); be with family and be a loving husband and father (Shiva as the family man); have control over your desires – the world is not all about materialism.
